Why Listening is the Most Underrated Leadership Skill

10 Jul 2025

Work with growing companies

It’s a common story: the business is growing, revenue is steady, the team is expanding — and then progress slows. Not because the market shifted. Not because the product got worse. But because leadership hit a ceiling. In our work with growing companies, we often see that the biggest blocker to scale isn’t external. It’s internal. And it usually starts at the top. Here’s the problem: the skills that built the business are not always the ones that grow it.

Adapt to what a maturing organization needs

Founders and senior leaders who thrived in a hands-on, startup environment often struggle to adapt to what a maturing organization needs — delegation, structure, and long-term focus. Common signs of a leadership ceiling:

  • Everything important still runs through one or two people
  • Decisions are slow because nobody else is empowered
  • The team is growing but the strategy isn’t evolving
  •  Burnout is creeping in at the top

It’s about stepping up

The solution? It’s not about stepping away — it’s about stepping up. Shifting from operator to leader. From reactive to intentional. That often means:

  • Investing in middle management
  • Creating systems so people can act without constant approvals
  • Getting clearer on vision, not just execution
  • Letting go of the “I have to do it myself” mindset

Leadership is not about doing more. It’s about enabling more. And in our experience, growth resumes when leadership learns to get out of its own way.
